Why this guide exists
Walk into any pet store in India and you'll see 20+ brands of dog food on the shelf, prices ranging from ₹150/kg to ₹1500/kg. The marketing on every bag promises "complete and balanced nutrition", "real chicken first ingredient", "for shiny coat and healthy digestion". The bags look identical. The price difference is 10x.
We run BARKO The Pet Store in Panchkula. We stock every major brand listed below, we open the bags, we feed them to our own dogs at home, and we hear back from 250+ Google reviewers about what their dogs eat. This guide is the conversation we have at the store every day — written down, with prices, honest opinions, and no affiliate links.
How we evaluated each brand
For each brand below we looked at six things:
- First ingredient. Named meat (chicken, lamb, fish) is better than a generic "meat meal" or a grain.
- Protein percentage. Adult dogs need 18% minimum; active or working dogs do better at 25%+.
- Fat percentage. Should be 8-15% for adults, higher for puppies and active breeds.
- Filler content. Corn, wheat, soy, and animal by-product meals beyond a certain ratio are filler.
- Availability in India. A great brand that's perpetually out of stock isn't useful.
- Real-world stool quality and coat condition. The dogs in our home and at our reviewers' homes are the ultimate test.
Prices in this guide are 2026 retail in Panchkula. They'll vary slightly by region and seasonal sales. Treat them as rough indicators, not gospel.
The 10 brands, one by one
1. Royal Canin
₹600 – 900 / kg
PREMIUM · BREED-SPECIFIC
French brand, science-led, with the largest range of breed-specific formulas of any company on the market. Royal Canin Labrador, Golden Retriever, German Shepherd, Pug, Beagle, Shih Tzu, Yorkshire Terrier, and more — each formulated for the breed's typical body shape, kibble size, and common health predispositions.
For purebred dogs especially, Royal Canin remains the most research-backed mainstream choice in India. The downside is price and the perception that it's "too processed". The ingredient deck is fine — named meat in the top three, controlled fat, balanced minerals — just not as boutique-looking as Acana's all-meat labels.
Pros
- Best breed-specific range available in India
- Consistent quality and freshness
- Widely available, easy to source authentically
Cons
- Premium price (~3x mainstream brands)
- Some recipes use chicken by-product meal
- Frequently counterfeited — buy from authorised retailers
2. Pedigree
₹200 – 320 / kg
MASS-MARKET · WIDELY AVAILABLE
India's most recognised dog food brand. Owned by Mars Petcare, sold in every kirana from Kanyakumari to Kashmir. The basic Pedigree Adult and Pedigree Puppy use cereal (maize, wheat) as the first ingredient with chicken/lamb as flavouring. Pedigree Professional and Pedigree Pro are noticeably better — meat moves up the ingredient list, fewer fillers.
For owners on a tight budget who want a complete-and-balanced food, basic Pedigree beats home-fed rice-and-curd or unbranded kibble. For long-term nutrition though, Pedigree Professional or any of the brands below is a more nutritious upgrade.
Pros
- Cheapest option of any major brand
- Available literally everywhere in India
- Dogs generally find it palatable
Cons
- Cereal-heavy ingredient list (basic line)
- Lower protein than premium options
- Larger feeding portions needed for same nutrition
3. Drools
₹240 – 400 / kg
INDIAN · VALUE PREMIUM
Drools is the strongest Indian-made challenger to Pedigree. The Drools Focus range (Adult, Super Premium, Puppy) puts chicken as the first ingredient, with reasonable protein levels (~24-26%) at a price that's significantly below Royal Canin or Hill's. Quality has improved noticeably over the last five years.
We recommend Drools Focus Adult often as the middle-ground option for medium and large breed adults — including Indies and rescues — where the owner wants better-than-Pedigree quality without committing to premium prices. Some batches have variability; sticking to recent manufacturing dates helps.
Pros
- Chicken as primary protein
- Made in India — fresher stock cycle
- Great value for mid-tier nutrition
Cons
- Batch-to-batch variability
- Not as research-backed as Royal Canin or Hill's
- Some dogs find taste less consistent
4. Hill's Science Diet
₹700 – 1000 / kg
PREMIUM · VET-FORWARD
Hill's Science Diet is the brand vets in India recommend most often, alongside Royal Canin. The prescription diet range (Hill's k/d for kidney issues, w/d for weight, i/d for digestion) is unmatched in India. The standard Science Diet adult and puppy lines are excellent — balanced, science-led, and consistently formulated.
For dogs with health conditions where diet matters (kidney, urinary, allergies, obesity), Hill's is often the first port of call. For everyday healthy adult feeding, Hill's is comparable to Royal Canin — pick whichever your dog prefers and your vet endorses.
Pros
- Best prescription diet range in India
- Strong veterinary endorsement
- Consistent formulation across batches
Cons
- Premium price
- Some recipes higher on grains than Acana/Orijen
- Less breed-specific variety than Royal Canin
5. Acana
₹900 – 1300 / kg
PREMIUM · HIGH-MEAT
Canadian brand owned by Champion Petfoods. Acana's ingredient lists are dominated by named animal protein — chicken, turkey, fish, lamb make up 50-65% of the recipe by weight in many formulas. Grain-conscious (some grain-inclusive, some grain-free) with biologically-appropriate ratios.
Acana is what we recommend when owners want premium nutrition but find Royal Canin's recipes too "boring" or want higher protein. The downside in India is supply — Acana stock occasionally goes patchy. We always keep a 4-6 week buffer at BARKO to avoid disappointing regulars.
Pros
- Very high named-meat content
- Grain-free options for sensitive dogs
- Excellent for high-energy and working breeds
Cons
- Expensive — among the priciest in India
- Supply gaps can happen
- Rich for some dogs — transition slowly
6. Farmina N&D
₹700 – 1000 / kg
PREMIUM · ITALIAN · LIMITED-INGREDIENT
Italian brand with strong reputation for low-grain and grain-free formulas. Farmina N&D (Natural & Delicious) uses single animal protein sources (chicken & pomegranate, lamb & blueberry, fish & orange) which makes it excellent for dogs with food sensitivities or skin allergies — easier to isolate triggers.
We recommend Farmina N&D often for dogs with itchiness, recurring ear infections, or loose stools that don't resolve on Royal Canin or Pedigree. The Italian sourcing and ancestral grain options (spelt, oats) are differentiators worth the price for the right dog.
Pros
- Excellent for food sensitivities and allergies
- Single-protein, single-fruit recipes
- Grain-free and ancestral-grain options
Cons
- Premium price
- Smaller bag sizes than mainstream brands
- Less name recognition than Royal Canin
7. Orijen
₹1000 – 1500 / kg
ULTRA-PREMIUM
Same parent company as Acana (Champion Petfoods) but a step up — Orijen formulations are even more meat-dense, often 80-90% animal protein content. The flagship "Original" recipe contains 12+ animal ingredients including fresh and raw meats. Designed around a "biologically appropriate" philosophy.
For working breeds, very active dogs, and owners willing to pay for premium-of-premium, Orijen is the top of the market in India. It's overkill for a low-activity apartment dog. Best used as a base food, not mixed with mainstream kibble.
Pros
- Highest meat content of any mainstream brand
- Excellent for active, working, and athletic dogs
- Limited carbohydrate content
Cons
- Most expensive option in India
- Too rich for sedentary or older dogs
- Supply less consistent than Royal Canin/Hill's
8. Purepet
₹200 – 290 / kg
INDIAN · BUDGET
Drools' sister brand — same parent company (IB Group) targeting the entry-level budget segment. Purepet competes head-on with basic Pedigree on price. Quality is roughly equivalent to base Pedigree, sometimes slightly better on ingredient sourcing depending on the variant.
Honest take: if you're buying base Pedigree on price, Purepet is a fair Indian alternative at the same or slightly lower cost. For meaningful nutritional upgrade, look at Drools Focus or one of the premium tiers.
Pros
- Very budget-friendly
- Made in India
- Widely available
Cons
- Cereal-heavy base ingredients
- Best as a base, not a long-term sole diet for premium-need dogs
- Lower protein than mid-tier or premium brands
9. IAMS
₹400 – 600 / kg
MID-TIER · US BRAND
American brand with decades of presence. IAMS sits in the mid-tier between mainstream (Pedigree) and premium (Royal Canin). The protein blend is decent, the ingredient list reasonable. Reputation in India has been mixed in recent years with some perceived ingredient changes, though current formulations remain solid for the price.
Reasonable middle-of-the-market choice — better than basic Pedigree, less than premium European brands. Some owners use it as the bridge when transitioning a dog up from mass-market to premium.
Pros
- Reasonable price-to-quality ratio
- Well-established brand
- Dogs typically eat it well
Cons
- Quality reputation has softened in recent years
- Not as differentiated as it once was
- Variable availability of full range in India
10. Taste of the Wild
₹700 – 1000 / kg
PREMIUM · GRAIN-FREE
American grain-free brand, Diamond Pet Foods. Recipes built around novel proteins — bison and venison, smoked salmon, wild boar — appealing both nutritionally and as a "natural ancestral diet" concept. Good for dogs with chicken allergies or palate fatigue.
Solid premium option, especially for dogs that don't do well on chicken-based foods. The 2018 FDA grain-free heart investigation included some Taste of the Wild formulas — the link is still scientifically debated and the formulas have been adjusted since. Worth knowing if you're choosing a grain-free diet for certain at-risk breeds (Goldens, Boxers).
Pros
- Novel protein options (bison, salmon, venison)
- Good for chicken-sensitive dogs
- Grain-free recipes
Cons
- Premium price
- FDA-flagged in grain-free heart investigation (debated)
- Patchy availability in India

How to read a dog food label (60-second version)
Five things to look at on any pet food bag:
- First ingredient. Should be a named animal protein ("chicken", "lamb", "salmon"), not "meat by-product" or a grain.
- Crude protein %. 18% is the minimum for adult dogs; 22-28% is better for most; 30%+ for working/active.
- Crude fat %. 8-15% for adults, higher for puppies and active dogs.
- Manufacturing & expiry date. Should be printed on the bag (not stickered) and within the past year.
- Importer details. Indian bags of imported brands should have an importer name and FSSAI license number.
If the first ingredient is corn, wheat, or "meat and bone meal", treat it as a low-tier food. If the bag has no clear manufacturing date or importer info, walk away — it could be counterfeit or end-of-life stock.
Frequently asked questions
Which is the best dog food brand in India in 2026?
There is no single "best" brand for all dogs. For most healthy adult dogs in India, the top picks are: Royal Canin Breed-Specific (for purebred dogs, ₹600-900/kg), Acana or Farmina N&D (premium, grain-conscious, ₹700-1300/kg), and Drools Focus or Pedigree Professional (mainstream value, ₹250-400/kg). The right pick depends on your dog's breed, life stage, activity level, and any sensitivities.
Royal Canin vs Pedigree — which is better?
Royal Canin is a higher-quality, more research-backed food with breed-specific formulations and named meat as the first ingredient. Pedigree is mass-market with cereals (maize, wheat) higher up the ingredient list. Royal Canin is roughly 3x the price of Pedigree (~₹700/kg vs ~₹230/kg). For nutritional value and breed-specific health, Royal Canin wins. For affordability and wide availability, Pedigree wins.
Is Drools good dog food?
Drools is a decent Indian brand at a reasonable price point (₹250-400/kg). Drools Focus Adult is a respectable middle-tier choice with chicken as the primary protein. It's better than basic Pedigree, less complete than Royal Canin or Hill's. Good fit for value-conscious owners of medium and large breeds, especially Indies.
Which dog food is best for puppies in India?
For most purebred puppies: Royal Canin Puppy (breed-specific or size-specific) is the most research-backed choice. For premium budgets: Acana Puppy or Farmina N&D Puppy. For mainstream budget: Drools Focus Puppy Starter or Pedigree Puppy. Avoid feeding adult food to puppies — they need higher protein, fat, and calcium ratios.
What's the most affordable good dog food in India?
For real value (decent nutrition at a low price), the best options are Drools Focus Adult (~₹280/kg), Purepet Adult (~₹220/kg), and Pedigree Professional (~₹260/kg). Avoid the cheapest unbranded local kibble — quality and protein content are inconsistent.
Is grain-free dog food better?
Not universally. Grain-free formulas (Acana, Orijen, Farmina N&D Grain-Free, Taste of the Wild) are excellent for dogs with confirmed grain sensitivities or skin issues. For most healthy dogs without symptoms, regular grain-inclusive premium foods are equally good. The 2018 FDA investigation linked some grain-free diets to heart issues in certain breeds — discuss with your vet before switching.
How do I know if a dog food brand is authentic?
Counterfeit premium dog food is a real issue in India. Look for: (1) Importer/distributor sticker in English & Hindi on Indian bags; (2) Holographic security seals on Royal Canin, Hill's, Acana; (3) Batch/MFG/EXP date printed (not stickered); (4) Buy from authorised retailers — at BARKO we keep import paperwork on file for every premium brand. If a price seems too good to be true, it usually is.
Should I switch my dog's food brand?
Only if there's a reason — symptoms (loose stool, dull coat, low energy), a vet recommendation, life-stage change (puppy to adult, adult to senior), or a discontinued product. If switching, do it gradually over 7-10 days: 75% old + 25% new for 2-3 days, then 50/50, then 25/75, then full switch.
Where can I buy authentic premium dog food in Panchkula or Tricity?
BARKO The Pet Store stocks every major premium brand authentically sourced — Royal Canin, Pedigree, Drools, Hill's, Acana, Farmina, Orijen, Purepet, IAMS, and more — at our Sector 5 and Sector 11 Panchkula locations. Same-day delivery across Panchkula, Chandigarh, Mohali, Zirakpur. WhatsApp +91 78144 44421.
How much should I feed my dog daily?
Feeding amount depends on weight, age, and activity. As a rough guide: small dogs (5-10 kg) need 100-200g/day, medium dogs (10-25 kg) 200-400g/day, large dogs (25-40 kg) 400-600g/day, and giant breeds (40+ kg) 600-900g/day. Every premium brand prints a feeding chart on the bag — follow that for your dog's specific weight. Split into 2 meals for adults, 3-4 for puppies.
